What are Botanical and Common Names?

I am starting up this page to make an easy place to find the botanical names, or INCI, for the ingredients we use in our soap.

I prefer to use the common names of all our ingredients because  in my own personal experience I feel that if it’s something I can’t pronounce easily, or know what it is, I probably don’t want to put it on, or in, my body.

The down side of this philosophy as a cosmetics crafter is that I am legally required to put it on all my product. The other downside, at this time at least, is that the labels I got for my packaging are too small to fit the proper names on. So, for my first two shows, and for general future reference, I am putting the full botanical names here.

To use this list please refer to your label and find the common name below, and next to that will be the botanical name. At the end of the list I will list each soap currently in rotation with the botanical names of the colorants used in them (some are quite lengthy).

*Some of our other soaps may appear to have been colored, for example Warm Sandalwood Vanilla has no color added. The color variations come from the vanilla content in the fragrance oil used, which causes the soap to darken over time.*
